Liberty and Commerce

Liberty and Commerce, a photo by webmink on Flickr.

This is the view from Battery Point in New York. The Statue of Liberty is still there, standing for freedom, both a symbol and a focus of America’s constitution and historic bias to the migrant.

In the background, the New Jersey docks are occupied by commercial cranes, which have adopted the same posture so you think they are standing for freedom too. They’re not; they exist strictly to make money for the highest bidder for their work. They don’t intend to be symbolic (they are, after all, just cranes) but they are all same.

Never confuse commerce and liberty, no matter who tries to disguise one as the other.
